Viking – Sustainable Toys that last for generations
Sustainability is important to Viking.
In 2021 Viking started a sustainability journey with the support of Mette Bak-Andersen, Ph.D., a designer and researcher specializing in sustainable design and materials from the Royal Danish Academy of Architecture & Design.
The project aims to improve the current practices toward more sustainable manufacturing at systemic and strategic levels, focusing on product and raw materials elements. Furthermore, it identifies and addresses barriers and potential projects that can improve sustainability within the company.
The project’s content covers subjects such as circular business models, strategy, design for circularity, sustainability in materials, production setup, transportation, packaging, etc.
As a result of these robust internal reviews of its processes, Viking expects to reduce its CO2 footprint, reduce waste, improve material circularity, identify new circular business opportunities and
define a strategy for sustainability in the future.
Sustainability Strategy – The three main points
Timeless design and quality
When it comes to durability and quality, Viking toys speak for themselves. Viking started producing the first toys in 1974, and some of these toys are still in use today. They design for durability, use only the highest quality materials to ensure guaranteed safety, and always submit their toys to severe testing to ensure safety and sturdiness.
Explorative play
Different types of toys will engage children in different ways of playing. Viking toys are designed for explorative and open-ended play. The toys handle elements such as soil, sand and water to encourage children to explore nature using their senses and motor functions. Our toys can be used outdoors and are dishwasher safe. No defined stories or instructions are attached to the toy, which inspires open-ended play and stimulates children’s imagination and creativity.
Striving to do good
Viking takes environmental responsibility seriously. They strive to do their best and consider sustainability in all aspects of the products and company. They never compromise on quality and durability. They strive to have no waste in the production process. For example, all plastic waste is recycled and used at the factory, and they reuse the water for cooling the machines.
Viking toys will last for generations. It means the toys can be easily passed on to more children to play with. The toys are designed for disassembly, are fully recyclable and are made from materials easily recycled worldwide.
Viking cares about the people working with them! They make sure everyone involved with them is cared for and respected in all ways.
